About us

Farvatn, the Norwegian word for waters, is derived from the Norse word ‘fara’, meaning ‘journey’, and ‘vatn’, meaning ‘water’. With our rich shipping history, we in Farvatn are familiar with journeys at sea. In 2016 we embarked on a new voyage as a diversified investment company, where we will explore both the known navigable channels and the uncharted territory of the financial markets.

Our history

Farvatn’s roots can be traced back to the founding of the JO Group in 1915, initially specializing in timber freight. From the 1950s the company’s focus shifted towards the chemical tanker industry, and JO Tankers ultimately grew to be the world’s third-largest operator of advanced chemical tanker vessels. In 2016 JO Tankers was sold to Stolt Nielsen, which marked the end of a hundred years of industrial shipping and the beginning of a new one hundred years as a diversified investment company.
